Micro wave radio recommendations needed for remote dcs to scada system data comms

Hi Guys,


What Radio Device will be appropriate to send a DCS Data to SCADA System of two separate remote control rooms?
 
Remote offshore site to onshore Control rooms


where at? in the gulf of mexico? if so, companies like rignet or tampnet may already have microwave backhauls that you can jump on.



You have given basically no info, so its hard to give a solution if we dont know the problem. I think setting up a microwave shot offshore for someone who cant formulate more than a very short sentence on what they are trying to accomplish will be a very tough feat. I believe your best bet is a vsat system. Get a VPN setup between your controlroom and the VSAT provider and keep it all on a private network.

Sorry guys, What I'm trying to accomplish is Visualization of a DCS data from a remote site to two different control rooms.


But new information I got shows that client has an existing micro wave system that I could latch on.


For the configuratoion, I thinking of configuring TCP/IP at the sending site and SCADA with OPC at the receiving end. is this going to work OR is there a better way please?

OPC is an application level protocol. TCP/IP is a transport / internet level protocol. They are not things that talk directly to each other. An OPC server for a particular model of DCS might use TCP/IP yes, but they don't "talk" to each other.

If they have an existing network then I'd speak to whoever manages that and see if you can set up a separate VLAN for the control system.

For future reference, specifying a microwave system is reasonably involved especially for an application over water. You need to assess pathloss, rainfade, fresnel zone obstructions etc. Its not something you just have a crack at without some training and experience. Engage a specialist.

On the side of SCADA, aside OPC configuration at the two control rooms.
do I need another OPC or Modbus(or something)configuration at the DCS side to acquire data?

Well that really depends on the DCS system. If it speaks a custom protocol then you'd buy the OPC server software from them.

If it speaks modbus or if your SCADA package has a driver then you don't need it.

Of course if you provided some details on what DCS and what SCADA package someone might be able to help
 
Microwave is typically used for long distance. How long are you talking about? Both latency and throughput aren't the best with microwave so unless you have to go that route, consider wifi instead.

You are jumping way ahead, figure out your physical layer first. For long distance SCADA type comm, typically people use modbus or DNP. DNP is especially band-width efficient. For OPC, I would consider using a OPC UA tunneller for avoid the whole DCOM Hell.
 
I'm not sure what type of microwave links you're thinking of Harryting? Do you mean satellite links? Microwave is exceptionally fast... You can do 1Gb/s links and up with sub 1ms latency. A lot of cellular service providers link their towers with microwave where fiber isn't an option.

Thanks Bro, Distance is really far as it is far offshore platform, Micro wave comes in here.
Will I need to deploy another protocol at the DCS side (Field) or is it just the micro wave configurations?
