a person who made a mistake when they were young and did not obtain an MBA in business or marketing!!

One of my friends from long time ago had only his 'electro-mechanics' (A2-you know what i'm talking about) untill 18 years. One of his jobs was for Mitsubushi in Holland: writing the instructions about how people should clean their machines. I saw his title for a presentation: cleaning engineer.

I would say: engineer is a title of education, not the title of a job.

Hello Combo,
Just my take on it...
Although at the time, not qualified by any particular piece of paper, the company that I was employed at as a controls designer for their machines and systems, my business cards had the title "Automation Engineer". Later, when I was solely responsible for writing PLC software (and commissioning of course), the company gave me the title of "Automation Software Engineer".
The term engineer is always quite emotive - more so Stateside and mainland Europe than here in the UK.
It seems that over here, if you "can do", then "you are".

Having said that, I have been involved in Controls for some (gulp) 30 years now!

Worse than that. I hired on at my previous job,and they made me an "Associate Engineer". Later, we were bought out by another company which didn't give out "Engineer" titles unless you had a degree, so they made me something else, I can't remember what. Finally after 19 years on the job, I was some 3-name position, the only one of my kind in a company of almost 1000 employees.

And I still did the same thing. Everything in the engineering or maintenance department that involved PLCs came to me, and was either approved and programmed, or rejected by me. I'm sure I was known by several names, none of which rhymed with "engineer", and that I can't list here.

Ok, here is my can of worms contribution ...

Entry Level - Automation Apprentice
Capable - Automation Specialist
P.E. - Automation Engineer

But, as Shakespear said: What's in a name?

And yes, I do have my P.E.

i..

I don't want to use the title engineer, I am not an engineer, so I won't use it.

But what to put on business cards...

PLC nerd ?

I need a correct tittle

tss

Pff, Bachelor, master, pfff

I'm not a master, SO WHAT, I can do the job without being an engineer, ... I know A LOT engineers who are very good in messing up programs, writing spaghettio programs, and even making it to hard for themselves. Okay, there are good ones too, but experience is much more important then the degree you have.

The company where I work for were searching for a "project engineer", and because of my experience I could start there.

Lamers who think they are better because of a master degree are mostly the one's who can't.

If you think you've made it and know it all, then you finished !!!

I use the title "Automation Specialist". Since it doesn't include the word engineer there is no confusion as to whether or not any "engineering" I do is of the kind that requires a PE license.

As a one-man company, I carry two business cards. For the times when I'm meeting someone likely to say "I want to talk to somebody who can make a decision without having to call his boss", I carry the card that says "President". If I expect the person to say "I want to talk to the guy who is going to be doing the work, not some salesman", I use the "Automation Specialist" card.

While I am a degreed EE and the president of my company, when someone asks me what I do, I usually say "System's Integrator".
