How to connect a Panel View?

I need to connect two PLC and one Panel View together. The Panel View supposes to control both CPU.

I have hardware:

1. SLC5/03, with DH 485 and RS232 - 2 pieces
2. Panel View 900, with RS232
3. Link Coupler 1747 – AIC, with DH 485 - 3 pieces

Is it possible to connect the Panel View directly to the CPU by means of RS 232?
People said: “that is for local connection only and you wouldn’t be able to control remote PLC”

Any idea?

Thanks.

You need to substitute a 1761-NET-AIC for one of the 1747-AIC isolators, which will allow you to connect the PanelView 900 to the DH-485 network.

The PanelView 900, although it has an RS-232 electrical connection, uses DH-485 protocol, which will allow it to communicate with both SLC-5/03's once you connect it to the DH-485 network.

Ok. Thanks.

How many 1761-NET-AIC I need:
One - with RS232 electrical connection that uses DH 485 protocol and two of them that I already have?

To my education please, what is the difference between RS232 and DH 485?

Thank you very much.

Let's make absolutely sure that I'm advising you correctly; please post the exact model number of your PanelView 900 terminal. It should end in a 9 or a 5.

RS-232 and RS-485 are just electrical signalling standards.

RS-232 is a point-to-point signalling method that can run about 50 ft.
RS-485 is a multi-drop signalling method that can run about 4000 feet and have 31 network nodes.

What's confusing to many novices is that A-B runs several protocols on these different signalling methods. Data Highway 485 usually runs on RS-485 wiring, but can also run on RS-232 wiring, thus the confusion.

more on that later... let's figure out your cabling first.

The exact number I can tell you on Monday after work, I am at home now. But I remember it probably ends in 9, because another PanelView has only difference in its end, it is 8, and that PanelView has and already connected by means of DH+.
BTW. What is the difference between DH485 and DH+?

Ok. I understand that RS232 is P2P, but sorry for my illiteracy, comparing with computer LAN for example, I can reach a printer that is connected to remote computer by means of RS232 or LPT from another computer.
Why not I can connect the PanelView directly to SLC5/03 that has RS232?

Thanks a lot.

The RS-232 port (Channel 0) and DH-485 port (Channel 1) on an SLC-5/03 controller are separate and have not port-to-port passthrough capabilities, so you can't just plug in the PanelView to one controller and access data in the other controller.

You must connect the PanelView to the network.

The exact model number of my PanelView 1000 terminal - is 2711-T10C9.
What device I should use instead of 1747-AIC?
Thanks.

Thanks, Alex, now I'm sure of my advice.

You need one 1761-NET-AIC, to connect the PanelView to the DH485 trunkline.

The SLC-5/03 controllers will both still require one 1747-AIC each.

The 2711-T10C9 will connect via a straight-through RS-232 cable to the 1761-NET-AIC. That 1761-NET-AIC will connect to the two 1747-AIC isolators using the DH485 trunk cable.

You will also need to provide 24 VDC power to the 1761-NET-AIC.

I need:
three 1747-AIC
one 1761-NET-AIC

Like:
SLC-5/03 -> 1747-AIC
SLC-5/03 -> 1747-AIC
2711-T10C9 -> 1761-NET-AIC -> 1747-AIC
Am I right?

Close:

SLC-5/03 -> 1747-AIC
SLC-5/03 -> 1747-AIC
2711-T10C9 -> 1761-NET-AIC

There are cable diagrams about this sort of thing in the 1761-NET-AIC installation manual. I'm sure the good folks at Westburne can help you select the proper cables.

Hey Ken,

Does that model PanelView support DF1, or does the SLC support DH-485 from Channel 0 (I ought to remember)? If so, why not use Channel 0 for the Panelview?

Of course, you'll have to unplug cables to program, unless you have a DH-485 connection on your laptop.

The 5/03 proc does not support channel pass-thru so to do it that way he would have to retrieve all the info in one proc and connect the pv to that one . He would also have to write any info to the other proc.

Could be done but alot of extra work and programming changes.

OOPS!

I didn't catch the two processor part. That would take some extra ladder logic.
