Hi,
I'm planning a trip for 10 days or so at the end of the month, and I'm considering Ireland.
So, the question is, is it worthly in this time of the year? rain?
And, the second question is... which part of Ireland? I was thinkin of trekking, sightseeing and look to castles and old churches.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Also... to know some places to stay... but that is the less. i think

There is a castle and old church in nearly every town. Any town with "kil" as part of its name (Killarney, Kildare) is sure to have an old church.

However once you get off the national highways, the roads are narrow 2-lane with stone walls on each side that are built right against the edge of the road. If you take the famous tourist route called "The Ring of Kerry", you will be unable to avoid such roads that are packed with large tour buses.

Unless you have experience driving on the left side on such roads, I recommend a guided tour or a bus tour. Yes, it will rain, no matter when you go. The rain is why Ireland is so green. Plants grow so fast there that they can burn the dirt (peat).

Plan to arrive a day early to allow time to get over the jet lag.

Things I liked in Southern Ireland:

1. Tour, and "Shindig" dinner with music show, and free welcome drinks at the Old Jameson Whiskey Distillary in Dublin. That Jameson is smooth stuff!
2. Saint Patrick's Cathedral in Dubllin (Yes, the famous real saint who supposedly drove the snakes from Ireland. Many famous people are buried here, such as Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver's Travels.)
3. The Book of Kells at Trinity College (in Dublin)
(Stay at the Mesphil Hotel while in Dublin, moderate prices and great hot showers.)
4. Blarney Castle and kissing the Blarney Stone (near Cork)
5. The "Ring of Kerry" driving tour. Forty shades of green in the Irish countryside.
6. Killarney National Park for hiking, in downtown Killarney
(Stay at the Killarney Towers Hotel, centrally located)
7. The Cliffs of Moher, sheer drop of 750 feet to the Atlantic Ocean, with excellent visitor center.
(Stay at the Courtyard Marriot Hotel in Galway)
8. The Quiet Man cottage in Maum, scene of the filming of the movie with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara
9. Cruise of Killary Harbour, a 9-mile fjord, near Leenane
10. Clonmacnois, an early primitive monastic church started around 600 A.D.

How's it goin Sapoleon, yeah Irelands definetely worth a visit althought at the moment the weather has been poor and the days are shortening quite fast. Not great for trekkin and getting around.

To get a better apprecaition of the country it's best visited during late june to mid august. Thats when all the festivals are on. You wouldn't be able to go to any of the counties without some sort of festival\gig in flight. Although most festivals are about the socialising and drinking etc theres also mountain walking festivals, vintage, Arts, food etc.

If I had to pick the best place in Ireland for what your loooking for then I'd say Galway (just slightly shades it over Killarney). It has everything from traditional bars (not them fake Irish Bars), mountains and treks out in Commemara (about 40km west of galway), the burren\cliffs of mohor (40km south), home of the irish tribes so castles etc in abundance. Theres alot of like minded people at this time of year who are cycling and trekkin around. They have a racing festival towrads the end of July and the whole West comes to a hault. Best time of the year but make sure you bring your drinkin boots!

As far as i know theres an Oyster festival in Galway coming up towards the end of the month (they don't need much reason to have a festival!) so might be a good time to visit. If you google "board failte" or "discover Ireland" should find out more. If you need any specific info drop me a mail and I'll do my best to fill ya in.

Weather is relative, in this part of the world 20C is the normal daytime high temperature and we woke up to 2C just the other day.

I prefer Murphy's to Guinness. And I look forward to the day I can get back to Conemarra.

I agree with Jim about the weather. Compared to where I live the weather in Ireland is never bad. A bit wet at times but you don't have to shovel rain. Personally, I like going in fall and winter because, from my perspective, the weather is better than at home and the travel is easier. I have only spent time in Ireland for work so I didn't get around much. I've only seen the south of Ireland. But I highly recommend the trip. The people are great.

But I STRONGLY disagree with Jim about the beer. Guinness over Murphy's any day.

Murphys is disgusting. Guinness is the only way forward. If your still planning on coming over and have RSLogix 5000, give me a shout and I'll hook you up for a bit. Lot of work going on in Dublin at the minute

That is probably understating the situation!

Like they say in Dublin, "What is the national bird of Ireland?" Answer: The tower crane.

Thanks Lancie for the tips.
It seems now, that I have to postpone the trip... there are no tickets for the time i can travel...
will see.
