Oh, I hope someone can help!

I have one little problem holding me up from studying this weekend. I'm using Rslogix micro starter light, it's a really basic problem but I cannot seem to find the answer. I need to add the description of an instruction on a rung, but the option to add the description doesn't come up when I click the instruction.

Is it some kind of setting maybe somewhere else in the program? I feel like I've looked everywhere but can't seem to find it.

Along with right clicking on each instruction, in RSLogix you can select the option to automatically bring up the description box.

Right click on the ladder window not on an instruction, select Properties, then under the Misc tab check Auto Describe New Instruction.

You can also open the data file and click on each word or bit and enter or change the descriptions.

And then after you right-click on the address and select to edit the description, you can select Instruction or Address. But you have to right-click on the address as Nova5 mentioned, to get started.

Keep in mind that an instruction description will be tied to all occurrences of that address and that instruction. It is not unique to just that one instruction. If you use that same instruction again with that same address, you will see the same description appear. But it is useful for instructions where you would reuse the address with different instructions, such as OTL/OTU, CTU/RES just to name a couple very common examples.

The method I_Automation mentions above about editing the comment within the data file work great for address descriptions, but not for the instruction comments. There is also a Database listed at the bottom of the Project tree (that window on the left edge), and you can add or edit any of the address/instruction descriptions, rung comments, page titles, and symbols from there too.

And then you have rung comments which get attached to the output address of the rung.. reuse that as an output elsewhere and the run comment comes along with it. the OTL/OTU.

Then you have the symbol comment... (its enough to drive you bugnuts..)

Thank you all for your replies! All of them were very helpful, but turns out my problem really was a newbie problem lol. I hadn’t selected a processor yet! I am studying hard, I’m sure my next question will be a little trickier. Thanks again everyone, have a beautiful weekend.
