Please help theres a heated discussion going on here.

My watch loses 6 minutes every hour. I set my watch this morning at 6:00am using an accurate clock. Now, the time on my watch reads 12:45pm.

What is the correct time.

Thanks
Bob

You shouldn't drink before noon.

1:30 PM

Your watch is measuring 0.9 seconds per second. If your watch reads 12:45pm, then 6.75 slow hours or 7.5 regular hours have elapsed since you set your watch.

actual watch
6:00 6:00
7:00 6:54
8:00 7:48
9:00 8:42
10:00 9:36
11:00 10:30
12:00 11:24
13:00 12:18
13:30 12:45 <- see note below

If your watch loses 6min/hr, then it loses 6sec/min. So 27 min is actually 30 min. (60min/54min x 27min = 30 min) (OOps had to edit a math error)

Thats my guess anyway!

Assuming linear, the watch is losing 1 minute for every 10 minutes of real time. So, Fake Time = Real Time - .1 * Real Time. Or Real Time = Fake Time / .9

Fake Time = 12:45 or 405 minutes since 6:00am.

Real Time = 405 / .9 = 450 minutes or 7 hours and 30 minutes.

It's 1:30pm.

In the spring, when we set our clocks ahead by an hour for daylight saving time, some people say we've lost an hour. In the fall, when we return to standard time by setting them back an hour, some people say we've gained an hour.

Based on that definition of losing or gaining an hour, your watch is running fast, not slow. Is that what the heated discussion in your office is all about?

Edit: Of course, you did say your watch loses time, so that implies that somebody gained it. Given that, maybe the watch is running slow after all...

If your watch loses 6min/hr, then it loses 6sec/min. So 27 min is actually 24.3 min. (54sec x 27min / 60 sec = 24.3 min)

Thats my guess anyway!

You scaled the wrong direction for the last "27 min". The last "27 min" would equal 30 minutes.
