Anyone know the Nema rating rating of an iPad?

We have an application where the customer's environment is rated Nema12. There is the need for operators to walk about the plant floor with a wireless tablet connected to Inductive Automation's Ignition via the optional Mobile module to set up equipment using wireless ethernet.

Would the typical protective skin/case rate an iPad Nema 12?

Ipad as a specific brand does not have a NEMA rating. However Motorola does have a line of Ipad type devices with NEMA ratings. Toshiba also has a line with NEMA ratings.

Downside of both is they run on the Android operating system. This will cause you headachs when intergrating them into a PLC network.

Thanks. Beauty of Ignition, as long as the client can run Java it will work.

We looked at some for our bigger customer. RSLinx did not like the android operating system, neither did Logmein so we dropped the pads and went with a Toshibia netbook with touch pad. The Toshibia are really rugged and the customer and techs are real happy.

I am going to start a new thread and see what people have running on the Pads with android, maybe it is just a lack of ability on my part.

No problem getting plc and automation software to run on IPad just have to run it in a VM view for Ipad and use the Ipad as a VM Ware View Client.

Ok I am a big fan of VMWare but I am not sure I understand the VM Client part. So do I basically set up a VM of my desktop that has RS 500 and RS 5000 and I am off to the races?

Will this work with any type of tablet?

I think I may be heading to best by in the morning to do some playing.

I saw that display at the Automation Show but he went way over my head explaining it then and in that video.

I'm not a fan of iPads on a production floor, for two reasons:

1 - Theft
2 - Easy to break

I will admit that I use my iPad for IO checkout and commissioning. I'll attach a wireless router to the PLC network and RDP into the SCADA server, terminal or my laptop.

I have commissioned the Panasonic ToughBook H2-Field at customer sites and I've been very happy with it. Rugged, easy to carry but bulky and noticeable if someone where to walk out with it. Bit pricey, think it was $3500 when I purchased them, but I'd go with it all over again.
