Hi,

I'm looking into a way I can share data between an old Omron CQM1H-CPU51 PLC and an S7 1200.

I've done a similar thing with an old Siemens S5 PLC and an S7 300, but not that experienced with these old Omron PLC's.

I'm thinking the best way would be to communicate over profibus, if I can find a Omron Profibus card from somewhere, and maybe use a DP-PN Coupler as the bridge.

Has anyone had to do this before? Or have much experience with both PLC's so they can advise what would be the best route to try?

Thanks in advance.

Russ

Omron --> DP expansion card --> DP/PN Coupler --> S7-1200.
Too complicated.
It seems you can have Modbus RTU, but you need an expansion card for that as well.
Is it correct that the CQM1H CPU only supports Omron CX-protocol natively ?
I searched for a gateway for Omron CX-protocol, but have so far come up short.

Before you sink too much money and time into this, maybe the old PLC is due for replacement for something newer ?

Hi Jesper,

thanks for your reply.

I agree the best way would be to replace the PLC, and that is the long term plan. The trouble is like most factories they run the machines a lot, and it's hard to get downtime to do upgrades. The initial plan is to put some kind of bridge in to be able to pull MES data out of it for a new MES system, but I'd like to also maybe use the bridge to gradually upgrade the PLC.

If I can establish a stable and quick communications between the PLC's, then I can gradually program the siemens PLC and test it quickly when we have the odd day free on the machines.

Why do you think this way is too complicated? I'm not sure there is an easier way to communicate with the Omron PLC through it's built in protocol? It looks like it just has an RS232 port.

I'm wondering if there could be a way to attached an RS232 > Ethernet converter to establish a connection with the S71200?

What do you think?

With the Modbus idea you mentioned, wouldn't I also need to get a Modbus adaptor for the S7 1200?

If your goal is to get data into the MES system, how about connecting directly without going over the S7-1200 ?
There is an OPC Server for Omron, so if your MES talks OPC then that would be the way to go.

Yes, that is one option, but I'm wanting to try and kill 3 birds with one stone here and get the bridge to S7-1200 set up for gradual upgrade and MES. Also a way to remote into the Omron PLC for fault finding.

In an Omrom CJ1M to Siemens S7-300 communication, my client installed a Profibus Slave module in to the Omron rack, but the S7-300 already had a Profibus port built-in.

To do direct Profibus communication in your case, you would need:

For the Omron PLC, CQM1-PRT21 PROFIBUS-DP I/O Link Unit
For the Siemens PLC, 6GK7243-5DX30-0XE0 CM1243-5 Profibus module
Profibus connectors and cable.

From this overview document:

CQM1-PRT21 PROFIBUS-DP SLAVE UNIT INSTRUCTION SHEET

It says only up to 8 words input and 8 words output can be exchanged with the Profibus master (in this case, the Profibus master would be the S7-1200). This might be too little information for you.

This is a solution without gateways in between, and I have no idea about prices.

#1 for the Beijers, for the price it is competitive alternative with the bonus of local graphics & even remote monitoring

Check out RedLion DSPLE protocol converter with Crimson software. DSPLE supports many protocols natively. It has Ethernet and Serial ports. You can connect CQM1H on serial port and S7-1200 on Ethernet, configure the respective protocols and map the addresses using C

I have used it for converting Omron Host Link protocol to Modbus RTU and also for connecting SLC503 to DCS using Profibus.
