I bought an old laptop with a serial port

Are you sure it's a serial port ? How many pins does it have ?

What model of laptop computer do you have ?

It is true that PC serial ports have historically been implemented both on 25-pin and 9-pin D-Subminiature connectors. 9-pin has been the dominant format for 20 years.

I have seen 25-pin parallel printer ports on laptops, but never a 25-pin serial port. Some may exist, but I've never seen them.
