OT: Flyback diode selection

I've noticed that many PLCs' 24VDC transistor output modules have built-in flyback diodes. Anyone have any insight on if that's sufficient for most inductive loads? I've also wrestled with adding diodes in the field and inevitably it ends up being quite a chore.
