Really getting frustrated by this now.
Do I need to use this WWW thing so that the IP address can be recognised in a browser window?

that's for the user web page function, if you want to create your own custom web page in addition to the standard stuff. not needed for just the basics.

Still really struggling to reach 192.168.0.1

I've tried different browsers (Firefox, Edge, Chrome) and connecting the PLC Ethernet cable to a different machine. No luck.

If anyone's got any more ideas/suggestions, I'm all ears.

Not going to let this ruin my weekend, but I'll be back on the case next week.

Cheers for all the help, really appreciate it.

I don't think it SHOULD matter, but I'd recommend giving your admin user all the permissions available (at least for now), instead of the currently listed "minimum".

Recommend a HW rebuild all then SW rebuild all, then DL of both, just as a double check.

dumb question, is there another device that also thinks it's 192.168.0.1? have you tried the laptop connected directly to PLC with no other devices in the network?

Would you mind expanding on this, i.e. exact steps?

When I compile and Download, I normally use these 2 buttons (pic).

No such thing as a dumb question, in my book.
Here's the layout inside the PLC enclosure (pic).

The 3 ethernet cables are labelled.

I guess I could disconnect the black one (a short piece that goes from the PLC to the switch), and connect the yellow one (laptop) in its place, right?

so here's the thing, Portal is really really picky about context, and what's selected when you push a button. It gives you the option to do a HW only DL, and SW only DL (always all blocks), or both HW and SW at the same time. Depending on where you click, the toolbar buttons do different things. If you have the PLC selected (like in my screenshots), compile button does compile HW&SW changes only. If you click on the program blocks folder, it compiles all the blocks (changes only). If you click on just one block, it only compiles that one block, even if there's something else in the PLC that it needs to compile to get your block to compile.

Just to make it even more dumb, if the PLC is selected in the tree, but then you click in the code you're editing, the PLC still looks like it's highlighted, but it's no longer selected, so it does a SW DL instead.

A Changes Only compile uses internal detection to track what changes have been made since last compile and just compiles that. It's pretty good (tho much better for PLC than HMI) and pretty quick. Compile Rebuild All starts from scratch; it takes forever but it makes sure it gets everything. This can sometimes fix weird errors that won't go away otherwise.

SO, right click on the PLC in the project tree and:
  1. compile HW (rebuild all)
  2. compile SW (rebuild all)
  3. download to device (HW & SW)
see screenshots attached

I didn't realise TIA Portal was that context sensitive.
I'm back home now but first thing Monday, trying this is top of the list. Many thanks again.
