1769-L23E communication issues

Howdy folks.

I am need of some help here. I have a 1769-L23E processor communicating to Wonderware Intouch. I just got on this project. I am trying to find out why Wonderware will not reset a tag. Its a time base tag. Anyhow here is my issue.

I can't seem to go online with the 1769-L23E-QBFC1 compact logic controller processor. It is using revision 20.14. Also I have no spare backup of this main routine/program. I can't update the firmware because that will wipe out the processor if I'm not mistaken.

Its giving me Error 806-8004280A.
Error: tag used as a PLC-5 mapping file not found
Error: Failed to upload PLC file mapping information...

I believe this is due to only having Logix 5000 20.01 on this computer. I have read that you cannot use that and 20.03 on the same machine. I know have a whole disk set of Studio 5000 V12.06.00 thru 20.01.00. I also have versions 21.00 thru 24.00. Another laptop here does have version 20.03, however it doesn't have an activation on it. Therefore its pretty useless to me. I tried to load the 21.00-24.00 but it still wouldn't communicate to the processor.

I even tried to borrow an activation from this laptop running 20.01 to the one that is running 20.03 but I couldn't get it to work.

If I uninstall 20.01 and use 21.00 then it will not connect and tells me;
Logix Designer support for this firmware revision is not installed. Do y'all have any ideas on how I can possibly connect to it without getting an activation for the other laptop with 20.03? I don't seem to have the disk for 20.03 around here anywhere and no one in my company seems to have an activation I can use for a few days.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

You can only use RSLogix 5000 V20 software for 1769-L23E, not Studio 5000 software (V21 to V32).
If L23E firmware revision is 20.014 and your computer use RSLogix5000 V20.01, it will work out since the major revision of L23E firmware and RSLogix5000 match.
If you can see the L23E in RSLinx classic without RED X or Yellow Question Mark.
open your offline project, then Click RSWhos in RSLogx5000, then select the Controller L23E and click "Download" button. after download finished, we will go online with L23E.

Being as I don’t have a copy of the project, if I do that, I will wipe out all the routines/program correct? That will be very bad.
There is no red X or yellow question mark. It does recognize the CPU and I have the EDS files so that isn’t an issue. I can see the processor and the correct IP address. I just haven’t seen an issue like this before. I need a copy of this project as it is no where on this computer or on any of the internal networks on the platform.

That’s what I have been trying to do and it gives me these errors. I have to save a project because it doesn’t have one. It creates tags, then gets and error and says failed to create mapping to PLC.

If L23E is physically working without ant issue, did you try to repair RSLogix5000 V20.01 in programs and features in your control panel of your PC?

Ok I’ll try that in the morning. I have just been going to the processor and try to go online. Or I try to just upload. I’ll try the new project first. Hopefully this will work. I want a backup of current program and fix where the tag went to reset the clock timer. Thanks. If it doesn’t work, I’ll update tomorrow. *

I have been doing just as this video did.

I have not tried to repair the program through the control panel as you said. I just deleted the whole 20.01 so I could use 21.0. After that I did reinstall 20.01

I still get the error.

I can’t figure out how to post a picture of it those as I did get a screen shot.

if repair doesn't work, i need to install higher version RSLogix 5000 from V20.04.

I have been thinking that was the issue. I just wanted someone to confirm my suspicions. Only issue now is, I don’t have a copy of that program.��* I have it on a different laptop but it doesn’t have an activation. I’ll look into rehosting an activation. I think I tried that the other day with no success. Thanks for the assistance.

Version 20 can be tricky. The concept of major revision compatibility is not the same. You need to read the Rockwell bulletin and make sure you are using the correct MINOR revision of Logix.

Max is right; there was a SNAFU with the minor revisions of firmware and RSLogix 5000 in v20.

That was resolved with RSLogix 5000 versions 20.04 and 20.05. Both of those releases of RSLogix 5000 can work with any version of ControlLogix/CompactLogix firmware v20.x.


What very probably happened in this case is that RSLogix 5000 version 20.03 was used to load the program into the controller. The program can be uploaded by RSLogix 20.03, 20.04, or 20.05, but not 20.01.
