I have zero job satisfaction at this time and kicking the idea around to learn building automation systems.

Has anyone went from programming industrial controls using PLCs and developing SCADA/HMI systems over to BAS?

I “assume” there are some similarities.

Thanks,
Bob O.

Thanks for the reply Ken.
It's funny you mention more travel because I would have assumed less. I've also recently learned I have a different definition of travel then maybe others.
My definition is being gone for days and weeks. I didn't get 500k+ ihg points by being home. lol
The other definition I heard called travel was going to a city or town near by for the day and returning home for the night.

I consider it "traveling" if you are sleeping at a Hotel/Motel.

I don't mind it so much, if I can be home for the weekends.

I think I missed my chance for a mid-life crisis...

The only way you missed it is if your dead, since you are reading this you still have a chance :D

There is a great quote...
today is the oldest i've ever been and the youngest i'll ever be again

The second part is the one I am trying to focus on because I will never be younger than I am today so I need to start doing....

I learned some basic PLC in vo-tech and loved it, was supposed to do an internship in a factory but that fell through.

Went to college, learning no PLC related subjects (except for controls and java/fpga programming). Did an internship at a BMS department of an electrotechnical installer for my BsEE, and found it was very similar.

You will likely deal with a lot of non-technical customers, up to you if that is an improvement or not :).

I guess it all depends on what you do not like in your current position.

I played with BAS over a decade ago. BAS is designed for higher level programming so it's easier for non technical people to set it up. it's a different culture and I think it usually pays less. The place I was working at had a Siemen's system where the last "engineer" tried to use it for everything including industrial control because he found it to be much easier to program.

If you can program PLC or DCS, BAS is a piece of cake.

Seriously, I would consider switching industry before considering going into BAS full time.

OH ya, I feel you on the crisis. I think I'm on my 6th mid-life crisis at this point. Sometime I feel like sending out that email that will result in my firing and I don't even care anymore.

As I get older, it seems I have less and less tolerance for stupid.
