Back when I started with the company, we had dozens of molding presses run by electromechanical stepper switches. I believe they were made by Eagle Signal. The blueprints showed that they had been in service since about when I was born...
I was taught to use a counter as a sequencer in a PLC, it works very well and I wish more people programmed that way - or at least the ones that programmed machines I have had to troubleshoot. Very simple to follow a program along and see where the problems are rather than using cascading internal coils.
