What is 1747-PIC

Good day. Recently had EE retire and I inherited his "treasure's" that have been amassed over the years. One such item is a 1747-PIC (for AB SLC 500). I'm relatively new at this and want to know what this is used for. I looked at the AB material but wanted to get an idea as to its application, to see if I chuck this thing or keep it. Thank you

It is an electrical convertor from RS232 to RS485 as used with AB DH485 protocol. With it a PC with a REAL serial port (NOT a USB to RS232 interface) can use the DH485 protocol direct to the RJ45 program port of a SLC Brick, SLC 5/03 modular and the DH485 HMI units.

Good news you can use that to program your 5/03 if you tie up your serial port with that marquee.

When you get tired of it locking up your serial port look at the 1747-UIC. It is the USB replacement for the PIC

It can also be used on SLC 5/01 and 5/02.

Don't toss it !

I keep one PC with a set of DOS software and the 15-20 year old interface technologies including the 1747-PIC. There are a handful of very old interfaces you just need those tools for.

If you don't maintain a legacy PC or have any very old SLC-500 controllers (fixed models or 5/01 and 5/02) you don't need this device. It's very hard to make the old DOS direct hardware driver work under Windows; we've been struggling with it since NT 4.0 and finally scrubbed the effort with Windows 7.

Don't toss it out, though; You should be able to get a 25% discount on a 1747-UIC if you trade in the old unit via the "Step Forward" program.

Never ever had that happen
