a guy who writes machine software is ? (job title)

My title is 'Senior Specialist Engineer' which I got labelled as 2 yrs ago

Called many things over the years, most too rude to write here :)

At a company I used to work for, everyone else used to call the software engineers just "weird" (n)

I am with Steve. I like the title "Controls Specialist" since it applies to more than just electrical controls, and "Automation Specialist" since it also applies very well to what most of us actually do.

Neither of those indicates a university degree, but certainly doesn't exclude them.

I have been a "Maintenance Specialist" as well, and found that a very fitting title. Now my latest title is "Project Manager" but I still often find myself fixing air leaks, tightening bolts, and even welding, among other trades.

I guess I still lean toward "Control System Specialist" or "Automation Specialist"

Oh, WDDIM? as long as it ends with "specialist", I think I would like it...after all, we are all somewhat 'special' aren't we? Even those who would call us weird, use that word with a special meaning...

I was a “Technical Specialist” when I retired.

Before that I was an “Instrument Specialist”.

Before that I was an “Instrument Mechanic’.

Before that I was a “Meter and Regulator Mechanic”.

Before that I was a “Chart Grabber”. (Best job I ever had)

Before that I was a “Student”.

Before that I was a “Buck Sergeant”

Before that I was an “Airman”

Before that I was 16 and the smartest person in the world. I wish I knew now what I knew then.

My current title is Control and Automation Specialist, which works for me. Im not an engineer, nor do I wish I was, no offence. I know what I know very well, and no eengineering degree can prove that otherwise

I am called a Electrical Controls Engineer on the business cards. No degree yet! When one of my bosses asked what my title is I tell them PLC geek. If a customer ask it is a whore that can be rented by the hour. Of course I get a good feel for them first.

What if a PLC isn't involved?
What if the system is embedded?
What if the system requires more math and physics than normal?
What if the system requires a data base?
What if the system requires a HMI or GUI?

This would require the word 'Systems' in the title. Or maybe just Techno-Wizard
