First of all, a big thank you to everyone on this board. I believe this is my first post, but I've been lurking here for some time and I know I've learned a lot due to the generosity of all the posters during that time.

My question is about VersionDog - does anyone here have any firsthand experience with it? We're about to schedule a demo, and I would like to hear the thoughts that any others have.

Thanks

There's a typo (or grammatical error) on the first page of their website. If they're not any more careful than that, I would be a little hesitant to use their software.

I believe that was just another translation error, getting so used to them, I barely notice them now.

Plc Kid,

Thanks for those additional links - I'll be sure and check them out. I guess I should have mentioned that we're a Siemens shop. VersionDog is in the Siemens catalog, so I had started there, but am definitely open to other alternatives.

VersionDog is a shell in the sense that what software it is capable of versioning depends on third party software.

For Siemens project there is no possibility to do code comparisons, for instance.

VersionDog also requires projects to be renamed to the same name before upload, so project can no longer have versioning by a date in the filename.

VersionDog is a shell in the sense that what software it is capable of versioning depends on third party software.
>>versiondog supports code comparison (Smart Compare) for Siemens PLCs and HMIs, partially with graphical difference presentation (e.g. for SFC, CFC).
versiondog is a software system for automated backup, versioning and documentation in automation. Specialised and detailed support is provided for most popular components like S5, S7, TIA, PCS7, WinCC, InTouch, CoDeSys, TwinCAT, RSLogix, robot programs from ABB and Kuka etc

For Siemens project there is no possibility to do code comparisons, for instance.
>>For most supported data types e.g. SIMATIC S7 there is no editor or 3rd party software needed

VersionDog also requires projects to be renamed to the same name before upload, so project can no longer have versioning by a date in the filename.
>>For several data types renaming of a project can be resolved by versiondog automatically, e.g. for SIMATIC S7. But, to be honest: manually renaming new versions is exactly the practice you don't have to rely on when you are using a software system like versiondog. Because than you always KNOW automatically who changed what when why.

1st time user of versionDog

Hi guys,
I am a long-time user of these forums and I can't express how much I appreciate the candor and detail of helpful information from both Customers and Suppliers. I am not associated in any way with versionDog or AUVESY, let me be clear on that.

We’ve been looking for a version control system and disaster recovery for our Siemens and Schneider Unity based PLC’s. We’ve recently installed versionDog and I must admit it’s everything that was promised.

The main features that we are finding useful are:

  • The automated backup feature and compare between the master copy on the server and the version of the program read from the PLC.
  • The check-out to versionDog launching the correct editor and checking back in of the new program. Using the easy client it’s very straightforward. I really like that you can give a change management ID to the version and a comment. The best bit is the fact you can see the differences between the previous version and checked in version without having to open the editor.
  • The easy install client is excellent as well. It means that people are able to install the client wherever they need it and I’m not required to go and configure that client to connect it to the server and the projects in the server.
I probably haven’t done it justice but I’ve only been using it for 2 days and I’m already very impressed. I strongly recommend that you trial the product on your site.

Cheers from Australia,
Suglets
