Hi, I have been asked to look at encoder options on a S7-300 plc system. Im looking at putting in a Sick-Stegman encoder (ATM60-P4H13X13) with a profibus Link Adaptor (AD-ATM60-KA3PR), as the current system has a profibus network with 12 Micromaster VSD's attached.

I need to know if anyone has used these and how easy they are to setup, and if there could be problems with 12 VSD's already on the network.
I have no experience with profibus or using encoders and HSC in S7 plc's.

Thanks in advance.. Leon

I have used encoders from TR electronic over profibus. They are fairly easy to setup as you can set most of the parameters in the HW config (Steps / revolution, scaling, counting direction). Profibus encoders are mostly absolute so you directly get the position values from the encoders and you need not using any HSC modules etc.

It is the easiest way of position measurement in S7. I don't think there will be any problem with the 12 VFD already on the network as long as you dont exceed the segment length of the profibus (200m @ 1.5mbps).

Hi

Hi,

I have used these encoders from Sick.
They are very easy to configure and to readout.

I can give you an example if you want (I'm not at work right now),

If you click on the picture of the folowing url, then you can see that we used such encoder from sick for measuring the cornervalue of a pressunit.

You can set the zero-point by pressing on an internal button. It's absolute, so once you gave the zero-point, it's storred.
You can give the zero-point over profibus as well, if you need te recalibrate sometime...

For the rest it's just about reading out the profibus periferial adresses, I can give my code from the press unit if you want. It's just about scaling the right way (resolutions that your encoder has).

Her is the profibus manual:

Combo

Thanks guys, and sorry for delay, had to put the project on the back-burner for a bit. Combo, yes I would very much like to see your program to see how the encoder is dealt with in plc logic, is it done in Step-7?
My Sick bloke has also told me there are now encoders with profibus built-in that are a bit cheaper alternative to encoder and link adapter.

Direction issue

Guys does any have an example program for this encoder?

Also I am having an issue with the direction in which I am getting the reverse direction and I am not able to change CW to CCW? What could be the issue here?

Hi, Can anyone recommend a good profibus encoder that can read the speed of a shaft? I'll be using it on a S7-300. Thanks
