All,
Any recommendations on a USB over IP solution? I need to administer and connect to (20) USB devices for config and setup, over an Ethernet network. I'd be using a Windows 10 machine to connect to the remote boxes as needed to tweak configs.

I've found several, but this looks most promising:

Has anyone used these, and what are your opinions?

Desirable features:
1) Stable software that doesn't crash - the devices are rather inaccessible, so power cycling the remote boxes to get a connection back would really suck.
2) Ability to give each of the (20) converters "friendly names" so I don't have to remember (20) IP addresses.
3) DIN rail mounting would be nice.
4) 24V powered (no separate power supply) would be nice.

Thoughts or suggestions on other vendors?

Thanks,

At first glance, this seems like the middle guy in all the communication going on. My thinking is, you want to use this device in order to make connecting to all your ethernet devices much easier.

However, troubleshooting will become more difficult, as now you have to determine whether the issue is on the USB side or Ethernet side.

Will you be tweaking these configs quite often? If so, it doesn't seem like a bad idea. You could always save IP addresses into an excel sheet as well if you didn't have the USB device.

Another concern would be area of work. If you are in a dirty manufacturing facility, I would not add the USB option, but if the environment will be clean, oil-free, coolant free, then it sounds like it will make your life easier!

I did something similar last year but it was for USB DAQ boards.

I used a mini PC and USB safely remove and a LAN Based Remote Access tool.

The PC below can be set to come back on in a power loss situation and the USB safely remove can be used like unplugging the USB cable and plugging it back in.

Wake on LAN can be set up so that any PC that is on can wake/start any or all of the others.

This is also a very flexible setup if things need to be added or changed later

We have used about a dozen of the W&T 53662 (has PoE as well, which you may not need) and they have been rock solid. Being used for SCADA USB dongles on High Availability failover VM Clusters, so need to be reliable otherwise SCADA servers fall over.

A testimonial form a satisfied end user is what I was looking for. Thank you.

Now, to find a US distributor with actual stock...
