Purpose of S7-1212C I/O Pin

Hi Guys,
I am aware that the S7-1200 series on their right side have an I/O expansion port. Like this:

But what is the purpose of the left side I/O pin out? Like this (look at the left side of the PLC):

Is there any application for that as well? I could not find any documentation for that.

Now I see, it is also being used for any serial protocol e.g., Modbus Serial.

Well, not exactly. It is used to add communication cards to the 200, of which you can have up to 3. Many of these are serial, but there are also Ethernet modules, and cell modems.

I see, also interestingly similar RS232/485 Interface is readily available in S7-300 series without any I/O board.
