Hey all,

Trying to install ver 17 of 5000, I have 16, 15, 13 already installed, just need 17 for a current project. It fails to install, looking at the log files I don't see anything, but I may be overlooking something. Anyone have any advice what to look for in the log files? Running windows xp....

Thanks

Thank you for including the Windows XP info. Now how about just a little more. What does "fails to install" mean?

Error messages can give us a clue. Also, can you verify for us what service pack of Windows XP you are running?

When installing it will go through and just give a Red X beside RSLogix 5000. No error codes or anything to that effect. That is what is throwing me.

Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 3. ESET Security (Virus Protection and Firewall)

A red X often means that it is unable to communacte to the PLC, which during program installation you do not need to happen, so I suggest you go to RSLinx control panel and stop RSLinx.

You also may need to stop the anti virus and firewall, at least for the duration of the install.

I'm going to have to ask for more detail. I'm sure it's clear to you because you have seen it, but "gives a red X" does not correspond to any stage of the installation wizard or resultant desktop icons or Start menu items that I can think of.

Are you installing from a DVD, or from removable media, or from a downloaded file ? Does the Windows user account you are installing under have Administrator rights ? Are you installing to the default path on the C: drive, or to another location ?

What exact log files are you looking at ? In V17 the log file was moved to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Rockwell Automation\RSLogix 5000\Logs

There is a good RSLogix 5000 Installation troubleshooting document in the Knowledgebase as Answer ID # 38515.

It is a locked answer so that won't do me any good.

As for the installation media it is the downloaded file from the toolkit page.

Log files are attached...

The Red X I am talking about is after you select all your features and it is showing you the status of the install. Hopefully the log file will help clear up things.

I am thinking this is the problem? So is this an issue with the actual download from the RA site? Retry the download (ugg, poor internet speeds at the hotel)? Or something else?

Now that's good information.

Use the ordinary Windows "Add/Remove Programs" feature to check on the various versions of the Microsoft .NET Framework you have installed. You should have at least version 2.0. Most RA products require you to install the .NET framework before you install any FactoryTalk-related product. The "Server" that error message refers to is not RA's download server, but rather the .NET framework server onboard your PC.

I did find another technote that suggested this error code can be resolved merely by unregistering and re-registering the Windows Installer:

1. On the "Start" menu, click "Run:.

2. In the "Open" box, type "msiexec /unreg", and then press ENTER.

3. On the "Start" menu, click "Run".

4. In the "Open" box, type "msiexec /regserver", and then press ENTER.
