I am working on a project that will have a S7-1500 tied to two 15" Comfort Touch HMI's. I established communications to the HMI today and I can turn on the LED.. I dropped a PLC Tag on my root screen and then when I compiled the project, I tried to download to the HMI. The download failed with an error, you must compile before downloading.. I did that but it doesn't seem to work.. Does any one have any ideas?

Also, I am replacing an old TI-555 and with Profibus Communications along with two FIM modules.. The system also has a Wonderware Intouch HMI..The S7-1500 coupled with the RS422-485 cards will replace the existing system.. The serial cards communicated to Siemens Drives via USS, I think..I found out that it is not worth trying to convert old TI to S7 so I am going to just try to duplicate the existing code. I am not really sure how to use communications to the drives with these new cards.. Does anyone have any literature or pointers on how to send-receive data to these drives?

I am relatively new to this TIA Platform..

Thanks,

Try to force a complete recompile, right click the HMI and recompile HARDWARE, after that SOFTWARE ALL.

If any errors come up, you can see them in the info tab on the bottom.

New with just TIA or Siemens HMI's in general?

This is THE golden rule when working with Siemens HMI's, it'll save you hours upon hours upon hours of frustration. You better make this a habit now.

Always and I literally mean ALWAYS do a Rebuild All before downloading. In TIA it's right click on device in tree menu on the left > Compile > Software (rebuild all) (or hardware if you've changed HW settings)

Siemens has had issues with just normal compiles since WinCC Flex 2004, since before they patched in the Rebuild All function.

And another thing I've had to learn the hard way with TIA: If all else failed, reboot your PC.

Try to describe the existing setup (before the intended conversion) in details.
Please specify the exact type no's of all the relevant critical parts.
What are the Profibus IFM modules used for ?

If the TI code is in Ladder, then just manually copying to similar Ladder in S7-1500 will be reasonably straightforward.
But even then, a conversion job from TI to S7-1500 sounds as a big job for someone new to TIA.

It sounds like the compile didn't succeed. What errors did the compile have? There should be a tab on the bottom with compile related info.

On the plus side, it should automatically compile before the download. The downside, as others have mentioned, if you don't manually do a "compile all", the standard delta compile occasionally misses things. I don't compile all every time, but it is the first thing I do when troubleshooting.

Also: note that for whatever reason PLC compiles prevent Portal from doing anything else, whereas HMI compiles appear to be multithreaded, and let you click around. HOWEVER, many actions (like something as simple as saving) cancel the HMI compile.

JRW, Please see the attached PDF for the existing system layout.. I will get the exact drive numbers when I go back to the plant.. The drives are late 90's DC Drives with Profibus and USS protocol Communications..

We are upgrading to the S7-1500 Platform... We have a 9 pin connection on the old FIM Modules and we ordered a 15 pin cable to mate up to the new comm cards.. I need to look at how I can convert the 15 pin to 9 pin so that I can keep the old system in place until the new is running..

Do you have the drive part number and a drive topology layout?
I don’t see a reason to have USS and profibus on the drives (if there is indeed both on them)

Here are the part #'s that they sent me.. I know that they are late 90's Siemens DC Drives.. They do have Profibus and USS comms to them.. The 505 PLC communicates Profibus-DP to all the drives in a daisy chain and the 505 FIM Cards communicate USS to the drives as well.. The PDF I posted shows the architecture and the JPG attached here shows it as well..

Reduce the picture size to 550x750 or zip and attach the zip file.

I find it odd that there is both USS and Profibus to all the drives.
Is it possible that they started with USS and switched over to Profibus at some time ?

Again, please post exact type numbers for all the drives and eventual communication cards on the drives.
