I'm looking at building an XY CNC, mainly as a learning exercise.

I have a spare Beckhoff CX8090, which is TwinCat 2 only. There are some TwinCat NC modules.

Is TwinCat 2 sufficient for a basic XY CNC or would it be worth the money on a new CX that is TC3?

Are there any other, better options than TC for DIY CNC?

Do these CNC environments all run on G-code or do some offer direct DXF import? No issue if they don't, already found open source DXF->G-Code programs, just curious.
