Those of you who have owned your own company with either a small team or on your own, what tittle did you give yourself?

I was going to just put Controls Engineer or leave it empty, but wasn't sure if I should just put owner, founder, engineer,....etc...

Just looking for recommendations before I make some cards up.

Thanks!

Depends the time of day....

When I get up at 4am im the Owner
When I have fished all the orders for the day I am called the Janitor
When the phone rings I am called Support
When something is wrong I am called Customer Service
When my wife calls... I am called a few different things (sometimes good)
When I send a customer the wrong part I am called ^%*)#$ *&$)
When I go to bed I call myself superman

But for the most part I leave it blank and let the reader fill it in

the rules for naming a company have changed in Tennessee.
you cannot use engineer, engineering, in the company name unless you are a degreed engineer. there may be similar rules in your state.

james

I think that only pertains to only in the company name, not the persons title, and it doesn't matter if you have a degree or not, it only matters if you're a PE or not. Only PE's can have a company with the word Engineering in it. At least that's what I know about here.

Haha, I was waiting for something like this. Thanks for the information!

I have 2 business cards, mostly identical but one says President while the other says Industrial Controls Technician. They also have a different graphic so I don't mix them. [I also have a proof of one that says Lead Pr**k]

The technician one is for when I am talking to a salesman and don't want to admit I have purchasing authority.

Mine said "Principal Engineer". I had a freshly-minted Washington State P.E. license in Control Systems Engineering, and included that on my business card because I was very proud of myself.

The exact state you are in is very important, because the professional engineering licensing board rules differ (a little).

The recent Oregon case hinged on how a person represented himself to the public and to a State agency. It was not specific to a business name or what's on his business card, though those could certainly be aspects of representation.

Back when I worked for Rockwell Automation they switched to a central business card vendor and gave us an online ordering portal with a set of strict guidelines. I ignored those guidelines and got a crisp box of 500 cards describing my job as "Automation Evangelist".

Like aabeck, I carried two business cards, one with the title, "Automation Specialist", the other with the title, "President". I used the Automation Specialist card most of the times I handed one out, only using the President card if I felt that the person I was meeting with wanted to talk to "someone who can make a decision without having to get permission".
Being aware of the connotations of the title "Engineer" I avoided using it even though I have an Engineering degree since I do not have a PE license.

Thanks, I'm in Georgia, so I think it's okay as long as it's not the company title, but now you guys have me worried. I will look more into it.

If anyone knowledgeable on Georgia wants to chime in, I'm all ears.
