Firmware/Revision RSlogix 5000 Help

Need help understanding how to choose firmware and Revision on RSlogix 5000.

Does the Firmware in the controller needs to match exactly with the version of RSLogix 5000?

I have RSlogix 5000 Version 16.04 and 20.04.

I also have a Controllogix 1756-L62 B.

The firmware in AB site for this controller are 16.023 and 20.019. They don't have 16.04, 20.04.

Can i use those?

Only the major versions need match.
Go with the latest, v20.* for both

There were some sub-revision compatibility issues in those versions of RSLogix 5000, but they were resolved by 16.04 and 20.04. You can work with those controllers with those versions of RSLogix.

After a few trips, Lock-Step...

This matching of the major version/revision is know as Lock-Step...

It was introduced at RSLogix 5000 v6.00/firmware revision r6.xx, onward, as the firmware revisions were being released in an orderly sequence but the supported software versions were not. By firmware revision r5.xx, the software was still only at v2.51. So they jumped the next software release to v6.00 to align with the firmware release r6.xx, and the rest is history.

If only they had "seen the light" early on with so many other numbering and nomenclature abominations?

By times, it seems like a bunch of Mayans were hired on and told to devise something that makes sense to them?
