Greetings,

I have several control cabinets distributed across a plant and they all need to be interconnected in a ring type topology. The customer wants to use FO to tie the control cabinets together. My question is, can I use a typical fiber optic patch panel to tie them together at a COMMs room? Each cabinet would have its own ethernet switch.

I was wondering how this interconnection would look like at the patch panel. Would I need to go through a media converter switch to accomplish this?

Thanks,

EE

In most cases, the cable installed between cabinets (racks/comm rooms) would be singlemode loose buffered. Use armored if there is a potential rodent problem. If it is all indoors, plenum rated is needed. This would land on a patch panel at each end and the cable is rigidly affixed for no movement. You can choose ST, SC, or LC terminations at the patch panel. Switches typically can accommodate an SFP module which acts the same as a copper port, but accepts fiber. You'd use a patch cord between the patch panel and the switch.

You need to investigate the differences between single mode and multi mode fiber. we use the star topology and multi mode fiber connecting over 12 different locations.

what ever you do, map the configuration. ESPECIALLY the patch panels.
patch panel 1
panel terminals 1,2 from main location to back of panel
panel terminals 1,2 from front of panel to building x to back of patch panel 2 terminals 1,2.

then can the drawings while it's fresh on your mind. otherwise, you will never do it, or have the time. HINT! HINT!

then designate specific people to make any changes and make sure to update the prints.
