I am trying to get factory talk m.e. to work on a virtual machine created in virtual box, having trouble getting it to work in a shared folder, do I need to just re-install it on the virtual machine?

What do you mean by "getting it to work in a shared folder"?

FactoryTalk gets installed on the VM's virtual drive, how does the shared folder relate to FactoryTalk?

Does FactoryTalk work at all?

Are you just trying to get a shared folder working between the guest and host?

It is also worth mentioning what your host OS is and your guest OS.
