Why does Siemens have to be such a *****?

Most of these problems started when I replaced the PC. I've only got one PC that is capable of online connection to our PLC's, and the old one was 6 years old and showing every sign of dying. So I got a new one, and started setting up the software. Took weeks, whether it was because of the wrong version (we've got a lot available) or was installed in the correct order (Simatic manager, WinCC flex, DriveMon etc). Finally got all that working, then discovered Distributed safety wasn't on it. Got that installed, and licenced, and the whole thing appeared sweet. So today I'm trying to add a comm's card to the Safety PLC, and I get two messages when trying to "Save and Compile".

“The F-library "Distributed Safety (V1)" could not be
found. Please reinstall "S7 Distributed Safety."

and

“Could not complete initialization of the safety program.”

I assume that until I get this fixed, I won't be able to add the CP 343 card to the safety PLC.

WHY does Siemens just have to make it all so hard?

In the Windows Start menu, go to SIMATIC .. Information .. and start the utility Installed Software.
Then post the result here.

And, in your STEP7 Project, right-click on the root of the project tree and select Properties.
Go to the Required Software Packages tab, and there hit the Execute button.
Then post the result here.

Many of us have experienced the pain that you are going through. Sadly, the best advise is probably to wipe the hard disk and start again.

The best advice I can offer is to use a vmWare virtual machine hosted under Windows7 to run all your PLC software. Once you have it all working you can save a copy of the image. There are several advantages: If your PC fails you can load the VM image to another PC and be up and running in mimutes rather than weeks. If a future upgrade trashes your system then you can simply reatore the backed up image rather than wipe your hard disk and start again.

And it was only a day or so ago that someone else was ranting about how much a pain AB software is.

Post the results of what Jesper asked you to do.

Just to stoke the fire, I have far less issues with Siemens software than with AB.

BTW, I kept the old PC and connected it yesterday.It's still working, though very slowly, and it has all required packages. But I've been unable to get the hardware catalogue to update (internet connection is OK). The ethernet card is V3.0. The new PC hardware catalogue shows V2.0, V2.2 and V2.4. I was told to install as V2.4. The old PC, only shows verstion 2, and despite connecting and all messages saying that the HW catalogue has updated, can't see anything past V2.0. And I don't trust it.

PS. Not an engineer. Electrician only.

It’s possible that the program uses some old version safety blocks. These may need to be updated but I would need a closer look. I’ll try to compile on a copy of the program here when I can.

It does say that you have S7 Distributed Safety Programming V5.4 + SP5 K5.4.5.0_3.5.0.2 K5.4.5.0 installed.

It could be a case of that the software installation is messed up, and you have to start all over.
Before you do that you should contact Siemens Support and have their opinion.

Btw. it says that it is a CPU41X, i.e. an S7-400. You mentioned that you want to add a CP343 which is for S7-300.
