I am currently using AB 6200 and APS software and have been told it is not supported on Windows 2000 Pro or the latest XP Pro. I have used it on Windows 2000 Pro but can only do Offline programming without any problems. I have linked into a PLC 5/40 via RS-232 but get dropped after a few minutes. I have not tried the APS with the SLC-5/04. I am trying upgrade my old laptops without having to buy new RS logix packages.

Has anyone had any luck using the AB dos based software with the new PC operating systems to communicate either RS-232 or DH+ on the PCMCIA card to PLC-5 or SLC-500?

I don't know about APS, but the 6200 PLC5 software can be made to work with RSLinx if you have version 5.3 (I think) or later. The direct drivers in 6200 won't function in NT or Win2k. I've used the 6200/RSLinx combo in NT4 and expect it would probably work in Win2k as its fairly similar at the level that the drivers work. However, it is a DOG.

Give yourself a break and get RSLogix - you'll wonder why you ever hesistated.

If its a major issue and you want a new laptop but dont want to buy new software then dual boot, its easy to create a dual boot system as long as you have dos disks (you can obtain free dos at http://www.freedos.org/).

Some sites that assist in setting up dual booting:
http://linux902.tripod.com/dualboot-choosing.html

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q153762
There are many more sites on the web that can offer assistance for this.

If you need to change your partitions to create a FAT16 partition then look at obtaining Partition Magic:
http://www.powerquest.com/partitionmagic/

Whatever you do, make sure the new laptop has a built in serial port, the issues involved with trying to use a USB or pcmcia adapter to connect to a plc in dos isnt worth it. Also note that there are still issues with newer computers because of ACPI when dealing with Allen Bradley plc's and adapters.

I've been using AB6200 in a dos window on Windows 2000 🔨 with a PLC 5/40 & 5/30 using RS 232 for about a year without any problems. I always boot the PC and start the software before plugging the cable into the back of the PC.
I did try booting once with the cable connected between the PLC and laptop and had problems going on line, I am only guessing that Windows 2000 detected something was connected at boot up and took control of the port.
