Hi

Had two modbus related work the last week, and can see that I need a software to capture the data that are sent between the communicating units.

Case1: Modbus over RS485
Case2: Modbus over RS232
If necessary, I can find out the name of the protocols used as well.

Have worked with RS232 and RS485 comm before but then it was pure ASCII, were just using a serial analyzer or even the windows Hyper Terminal.

What software are you using when working with Modbus, what I want to achieve is to fetch the data from the sending unit and simply get it screened or even better be able to store it to a file.

For most Modbus applications, I just use an ordinary serial capture tool like HHD or Docklight, and decode the Modbus commands manually or with the Chipkis Modbus parser.

The best network analysis software I have used is Frontline Test Equipment's NetDecoder software. It has both very good capture utilities and very good decoding features for a wide variety of network protocols, including the Allen-Bradley protocols I use the most.

For Modbus RTU on RS232 or RS485, I strongly recommend Frontline Test Equipment's SerialTest:

Hello Mr. Roach,

I realize this is an old thread however, it is new to me. I am trying to integrate a Yokogawa temperature control with a RedLion HMI. I am not having much luck getting the two to talk, using Modbus and RS485 connection/protocol. I like the serial tester you show above however, way out of my economic reach. Do you have any other recommendations for someone new to the serial communications world?
Thank you

You could try to use an RS-232/485 converter and ordinary serial terminal software like RealTerm or Docklight. But I've run into a lot of difficulties getting handshaking to work correctly and parsing the data stream when I'm using the very cheapest interfaces.

In my opinion the best value for money is the Stratus Engineering EZ-Tap and Versa-Tap.

Because you are doing an RS485 interface analysis, the Versa-Tap is what you want.

Stratus manufactures the interface boxes for Frontline, though the units you buy from FTE have specific firmware to work with SerialTest.

I've used MODSCAN32 and MODSCAN64 with very good results. I've always used it with a TCP connection, but it has option to connect through a COM port, and I see no reason why it wouldn't work as well for RTU connections.

The price is right too. Even the more expensive MODSCAN64 is under $100.
