I have been looking at trying a Compactlogix 5380 system with some point I/O attached to it, does anybody have experience with the newer 5380? I am looking to replace some systems we built using hardware from a different vendor that has not been all that reliable and I do not want to have a repeat of that with new hardware. I am hoping it has been out long enough that the growing pains and early bugs have been worked out of the system. Any input is welcome.

So far so good here. Just some differences with the 1769 stuff but otherwise no major issues.

I have heard rumblings of some issues with the relay output modules, particularly when being used on 120V/230VAC. Also apparently input modules are more susceptible to interference than previous series'.

Have a read through this thread, particularly the second page.

Personally, I've used exactly one of the 5380's, I handed it over November last year and so far no problems.

Read though the linked pages and that certainly gives me pause on specing a 5380 system. Maybe I should take a harder look at 5370 with 1769 IO. The dual ethernet ports and faster cpu is more future proof and tempting though.

I'm routinely designing and commissioning the 5380 in both safe and non-safe versions for the last year or so. The input sensitivity has forced the panel builders and electricians wiring the machine to be pro-active on how the wiring is routed, avoiding the "dirty" stuff. To my knowledge, the 5069 safety I/O is still not yet available; I wonder if the standard I/O issues are delaying the safety I/O certification/release.

I've seen thing from machine builders that use Point I/O for everything, including the same panel as the PLC.

I've commissioned eight of these, with no I/O attached to them and I have to say, the dual IP is nice!

My opinion and $1.50 will buy you something about $1.50 worth...
