Looking to get a Controls Engineering degree, where do I start?

+1 to everything that Tom Jenkins said.

With that said, before you begin the journey, ask yourself if you are truly committed to it. I have known several people who started taking classes, but never finished - it is not easy. I feel so blessed that I was able to go to college before entering the real world because I was able to focus 100% on school. I have infinite respect for the people that get a degree while they work and have a life. I don't know how they do it - I'm not sure that I could.

Elon Musk has a video on YouTube about his opinions on degrees. If you are curious and willing to learn on your own you don't need college. I think going to college to learn how to program is silly. There is plenty on-line information. Going to college to better your math and physics skills is OK. In the end you have to ask yourself, are you going to be a user or designer? There are few designers but these positions pay more.

College exposed me to a couple of things that I still use today. Calculus, differential equations, numerical analysis and physics. All these things I use each day.

Hi All.

I'm also one with no degree directly related to a double "E" or automation control fields. I'm a Millwright by trade and that got me in the door at a large company. I cross-trained as an electrician, focused on automation controls and eventually accepted a specialist position that supported over 100 pieces of equipment in an assembly department.

In my opinion work experience is just as valid as any degree. My point is employers are looking for employees with well rounded backgrounds that can manage complicated projects and work in teams to countermeasure issues on a day-to-day basis that improves quality, efficiency and the companies goals and objectives.

Regards
Sydney
