Has anyone out there had any experience with any Motor-Generator UPS Systems?

http://www.precisepwr.com/power_quality_ups.asp?bhcp=1

They are essentially an electric motor/ generator that is constantly running to generate 'clean' power. The generator is coupled to a large flywheel which, on a power failure will maintain power generation, engage the integrated gas motor (Ford 460CID) which in turn will start and maintain uninterrupted power supply.

Just seems to me to be more moving parts to fail, but I was wondering if anyone has experienced more or less reliability than the traditional battery back-up.

I would be hard pressed to find a battery that could store as much energy as a 460 CID Ford engine could produce.

The Omnimax theater in Monterrey Mex uses such a system (I've not seen it). All incoming power drives a motor coupled to a huge granite flywheel which in turn drives the in-house generator/alternator.

Obviously there are energy losses involved through any system transfer.
Thats why I like to design using HexFets (.002 ohms on) and at fairly high freqs.

I stop waving my ignorance now

We do a number of systems that use rotary UPS units, as well as static systems and combined systems. They are good if you need ride thru for short periods of time, say a few secondes, enough to get a standby generator on-line and restore a source of power. The military is also using a number od smaller rotary units as "active power conditioners" at communications and fire control sites.

The newer units are pretty robust and reliable, but do require regular maintenance and usually a higher level technical support staff. Active power and Caterpillar both market units in North America, and there are several others suppliers as well.
