Greetings everyone,

This is off topic for this board, but I figured with the math background of individuals on this board I could get some light shed on this.

I'm trying to understand what mean log reduction is. I understand basic log reduction, i.e. log 10 reduction of 2 etc.. Another equation is used primarily in microbiological kill analysis called mean log reduction. Google hits about 2,000 references to people talking about mean log reduction but I cannot find anywhere which explains the equation to figure mean log reduction.

Any ideas?

TIA,

Greg

There are a couple of mean log things out there.

If temperature related: The log mean temperature difference (LMTD) is used to determine the temperature driving force for heat transfer in flow systems.

The geometric (or log) mean is used to summarize data that may have a few high or low values that would skew an arithmetic mean. The geometric mean should ONLY be used to summarize microbiology data. The geometric mean differs from the arithmetic mean in that data are transformed to log values before averaging.
