Hi All:

What is involved in adding a new AO card to a SLC500? From what I understand, hot swapping is not an option.

So I my guess (and Im hoping you can correct me here)

1) Power down PLC
2) Insert new card
3) Power up and connect in Program Mode
4) IO Configuration -> Read IO Config (To recognize new card)
5) Place back in remote run mode?

Thank you!

Close.... but I would add

A) Backup program
1) Power down PLC
2) Insert new card
3) Power up and connect in Program Mode
4) IO Configuration -> Read IO Config (To recognize new card)
4a) Configure new card (depending on card)
5) Place back in remote run mode?
5a) Cross fingers :)

I appreciate the quick reply! Thanks a ton!!

I will add to check for an installed EPROM.

Thanks Bob.

Is it normal for the PLC to fault if the card was attempted to be installed online? I've been told that somebody tried to install the card already and it faulted the PLC, the card was then removed and the PLC was reset. I'm not sure if they powered it down first or not, but because the PLC faulted I'm going to guess this was likely because a hot-swap was attempted?

I don't know/remember because it's been a long time since I need to do that. If I had to add a card, I just added it without using the "Read I/O"

My SOP:

1. Go online with PLC
2. Save program, uploading all data
3. Go offline
4. Copy and paste PLC program to a "Backup" folder
5. Add new module to PLC hardware configuration and configure as appropriate
6. Save program
7. Power down PLC
8. Install card
9. Switch PLC to program mode
10. Power up PLC
11. Download modified program
12. Switch PLC back to run mode
13. Save program, uploading all data
14. Profit!
