RS Logix and RS Linx
Has anyone heard anything about a combined Logix and Linx software release. I'm just a little frustrated with having to start up both to watch a program run. I heard a rumor from one of our engineer types but haven't heard it anywhere else yet.

No, there is no RSLogix with "integral" RSLinx
(of course, every RSLogix comes with RSLinx lite, but thats not what you are after). You dont have to start RSLinx manually. When you click "go online", RSLinx starts automatically. If you are not satisfied with the delay that comes from RSLinx starting up, you can start RSLinx as a service (Find the RSLinx Launch Control Panel in the same folder as RSLinx, then put a tick in Always Run as Service).

Jesper,
I was under the impression that I had to start RS Linx every time I started RS Logix. But I may have just learned something new, now if I could just get to the laptop that has it on it. Seems to be locked in someone else's office tonite. Thanks for the heads up though. |

Linx launches automatically whenever you try to do any communications under RSLogix. If you select System Comms, Go Online, Download, or Upload. As was said before, there is a little bit of a delay while Linx launches though.
Under windows 2k/XP, you can chose to run it as a service, so that it runs whenever windows is running. I typically do this with dedicated HMI workstations, but not with programming laptops (for a variety of reasons, ie. Linx locks itself onto your serial ports so that you can't use them with other programs, general system slowdown, etc.) |

It is correct that RSLinx will grasp control of the COM port, that is - if a DF1 or PIC driver has been configured.

Absolutly, And disabeling the driver from RSLinx will not do it, You must remove it and reboot your computer to get your com port back |

The DF1 driver can be set to start manually on startup, so if you use the DF1 then all you have to do is reboot to regain your com port.

All I do to get my COM port back is stop the DF1 driver and leave the UIC running. I never have to reboot or even shutdown RSLogix.

Give me my com port back........
As far as I know, the main problem is with the PIC driver, not the DF1.....

Thanks, Gentlemen!!!
I was just having a time of it yesterday morning and I don't normally have to mess with SLC's but for some reason a strapper lost it's mind and needed a BFH applied or some simple timer changes. The worst part is I only have 4 SLC's in plant all the rest are Direct 205 and 405. Of course with those you don't need a seperate communication program running. Thanks again!!!!! |

DF1 and PIC both hooks the COM port. DF1 can be stopped without rebooting. PIC requires a reboot to stop.

You could be creative, and write your own driver?

Look at the forest, not the tree.
RSLinx Lite starts automatically when RSLogix needs it. It can be closed with a right-click. It's free.
I can conceivably see you complaining about the PIC driver. I agree that it's a pain, which is why I got a 1747-UIC and never looked back. If you were using PanelBuilder and RSView and RSLogix and RSNetworx all at the same time, you'd be thankful that each one of them didn't have a built-in communication driver contending for the same serial port. |
