S7 MPI Cabel

Hi Everybody

I was looking for MPI cabel to connect btween S7 to my PC.
I found 2 option.
1.serial cabel 300Euro.(Siemens vanish AB in cabel price)
2.USB cable 120$

Dos anyone have expirience with the USB?
Do you know cheaper way to get this cabel?

Arik,

the serial cable has limited speed on the serial side (I think 38400baud on the new ones, it used to be 19200baud max.) while the USB cable goes up to 12Mbaud all the way. Simple choice to me: cheaper AND faster.

When I come to buy this USB they told me its reular USB to serial adaptor with 5v supply.

Could you recommend me USB to MPI that work?


I did pretty good work with the simulator, now I comming to the real world.
I do not understand why they ask 300 Euro for this cabel.
I would like to buy it with resnable price.

I use the USB2MPI cable from Siemens itself, I think the price is reasonable, it has definitely been a good buy for me. After all, it's not a simple electrical convertor, but it's also a protocol convertor. It talks MPI, PPI and Profibus. For that reason it has it's own processor. It's not as if it was a mere PPI convertor for S7-200, because there you can use any data driven RS232/RS485 converter you like. This is much more.

Don't forget: cheaper is not always better.

It doesnt come cheaper than 300 Euro for an online cable to S7.
Only exception is if there is an Ethernet port on the PLC, but I dont think that is what you are considering.

Warning: Someone mentioned VIPA. VIPA uses a special online cable ("green cable") that is NOT compatible with Siemens S7 !

i have just been through this charade with step 7! due to laptop upgrade (no serial port) i have tried USB to serial (laptop turns off when attempting to go online), pcmia to serial card (laptop works once then freezes and turns off) and finally siemens USB to MPI! this works fine and i would recommend nothing else, save your time and money and buy the siemens USB to MPI!
