Cable for Panelview +

Hi All,

Can you tell me if the cable you need to communicate with RSView ME through the laptop serial port to a panelview+ serial port is a standard null modem cable?

I have a null modem cable that i use to connect from RSLogix 500 to SLC5/05's that works in liu of the official CP3 cable and would like to know if you can use the same cable.

Best Regards,

Lee

For reasons that are as obscure as the mists of time themselves, PanelView Standard and PanelView Plus terminals have "DCE" type serial ports. You must connect them to your PC's serial port with a straight-through cable, not a null-modem cable.

Or even easier is the ethernet connection. Without a switch/hub, you'd just use a cross-over cable.

Cheers Ken/OZEE.

I've just purchassed the software and a spare panelview as spares/to give me something to play with. So i'll give the ethernet a blast, we've got a fibre/ethernet switch at each station so there are plenty of free ports to plug into.

I don't have the original program the plan was to pull off the .mer file's off each panelview for safe keeping. Will not having the original programs cause me any problems conecting to the panelview? - I was used to the older panelview's/software. and i've yet to play about with ME.

Cheers Chaps,

Lee

It is my understanding that you can't upload from the panelview plus unless you already have a copy of the program on your computer and you will need it supplied by the origional suppliers as a back up file which is an *.API file

To clarify Gil47's statements:

1. You can upload an existing .mer file from the PanelView Plus, even if you do not have the original file. All you need is a connection between your PC and the PanelView(s).

2. The backup application can be transported via email as a .apa file.

3. If you do not have a copy of the original application (or cannot get the .apa file from the supplier), you can search this forum to find several threads dealing with a way to convert the .mer file so that most of the application will be useable.

4. FYI, plans are in the works for the next release of RSView ME to contain a feature that will convert .mer files to an application file. However, I believe this will only work for files created in that version of the software.

Hi Rick and Gil47,

Thanks for the info - was a little dissapointed at GIL's post but perked up a bit now! I'm on my off rotation at the minute but will give this a shot when back on shift.

Cheers,

Lee

what kind of panel view do you have? is the serial port DTE or DCE? this will determine what type of cable you need period. The panelviews i have downloaded required A null modem cable. DTE type will require a null modem cable period. a DCE WILL REQUIRE A 9 PIN SERIAL STRAIGHT THROGH. BELL.

p_logix' your a tough nut to crack.
The only Allen Bradley panelviews that require a null modem cable are the Stanard PanelView 300 Micro. All others with serial connection use a straight thru cable.
