OT, Over size drives??
Hello all,
I have a dozen or so AB 160-BA03NSF1 with device net modules, I am building a conveyor system with a several sections and the conveyor's come with motors mounted on them. My question is, the motors are 1/2hp, these drives are 1hp...is there a issue with using a larger rated size drive? I hate having something close to what I need (also free) and not being able to use them Thanks

no problem
We do this all the time since the plant wishes to minimize spare parts. Even though most of our conveyor motors are 1HP (overkill in itself), we install 3HP VFDs. Just configure the drive appropriately per the motor's nameplate data.

GIT, Same thing here but there are some other reasons. For one, I have pretty much gotten rid of my 160's in favor of the powerflex4. I like them much better and I don't think the 160's are available anymore. Back to the 160; if I remember correctly, the dynamic brake is only available on drives larger than 1 HP. Since I had some applications where I would use the dynamic brake, I pretty much standardized on 1 size (which was 2HP) for a range of motors. I do the same for the PF4. I only keep 2 sizes in our spare parts. The only problem I've seen if you get too big of a drive, the setting for running amps might not have enough resolution (but I don't think that was on the AB drives).

The 160 drives are alive and still available. Not a lot of features, but for conveyor control they are great (that's all we usually do here). And, at least in my area, are still cheaper than the PF 4's.
