I'm having to do work using multiple versions of RSLogix 5000. The project I have coming up needs version 13.04 which I've found won't run at all on Windows 7 or 8. I've seen it suggested to install a Windows XP virtual machine on my PC, which sounds like a reasonable solution.

My question with doing it this way is how will RSLogix handle the activation (I currently have the internet based activation scheme). Will RSLogix running on the XP virtual machine be able to see the activation which resides on the main operating system (Windows 8)?

thanks

I believe the answer is yes. You'll need to install FTAM on the VM and point it to the host machine as the license server. Here are a couple of threads on the subject with more details:

Pay particular attention to Ken Roach's comments about using the IP of the host as the path in the guest FTAM search path.

If your license is Concurrent, I expect you will have no problems. If it is "Node Locked", you may have problems, since it will only activate the software on a machine which it can associate with the hardware ID. If Node locked to the network card or hard driver serial number, that info may not be readily "visible" to the guest (VM).

I had rockwell tech support change a licence for me from node locked to concurrent without any hassle. That was at a previous job with Techconnect support contract and when FTAM was relatively new and aggressively supported, so your mileage may vary.

Not sure about windows 8 but i know RSLogix 5000 version 13 will run on Windows 7. There are some patches that they recommend for RSLinx to communicate a CLX that is running version 13. Seems to run fine on my PC

I've recently run RSLogix5000 version 13 under Windows 7. The only issue I encountered was with the Windows Help. A download from Microsoft made that work.
