Hi Everybody!

Has anybody ever tried using the 1747-UIC (USB to DH-485) converter as a straight USB to RS-485 converter?

Since it present to the PC as a virtual serial port, I was wondering if I could get double-duty out of it.

Thanks!

TM

never tried it but...
I do not think it will work that way.

DH-485 is specific to Allen Bradley and the 1747-UIC was made to replace the old 1747-PIC.
the 1747-PIC was serial to DH-485

The 1747-UIC is both a USB to serial UART device with an RS-485 physical signal, and also a protocol converter (DF1 to DH485).

You couldn't use it as a USB/RS485 interface for an application that used Modbus or ASCII or another serial protocol.

I don't see it working DH 485 and RS 485 are completely different proto calls the same a using a RS 232 to RS 485 converter will not work
Before the UIC they had a RS32 to DH 485 converter to use on original 500 bricks

The 1747-UIC really is a two-trick pony.

The 1747-UIC will not work as a general-purpose USB to RS-485 interface.

It converts the A-B proprietary PCCC protocol commands and data transported by asynchronous DF1 protocol to the same commands and data transported by the token-passing Data Highway 485 protocol, either over RS-232 or RS-485 signaling.

It won't know what to do with ASCII or Modbus or other protocol framing, let alone the data payloads.
