Control Logix: Safety CPU... how will this affect modifications?

I just read something that I need to dig into a little...

I'm about to start a project where we'll strip out unneeded components of a machine purchased on the used marketplace, before piecing it together with other components to build a larger, but slower, machine. I looked at the PLC and and I noticed it's a safety PLC... I haven't dealt with one of these yet. I did upload the program from the CPU without any issues from the USB port. I'm curious about the red, safety CPU, so I noticed something that said the benefit of using that card was that people couldn't disable safety devices in the program. Hmmm.... really? I'm stripping out much of the "hazardous" part of the machine, which is not intended for the kind of production my customer does, and I'm taking all I/O connections with it. Afterwards, I'll modify the program to cut out all of the supporting logic. So I need to understand what I'm dealing with. Does the safety processor prevent this kind of pruning?

Btw, I could erase the entire memory and write the program from scratch if
needed. But I'd rather modify it than go that route. Do you have any thoughts about what I'll face modifying a program with the a safety PLC processor included?

Because that's an L71S, the "Safety Partner" is necessary for it to run at all; you can't just remove the Partner and run it as an ordinary controller.

You'll need the Safety license for Studio 5000 in order to modify any of the Safety routines. My "Studio 5000 Professional" license includes the Safety editor, but it's also available as an a-la-carte add-on.

You could, if you wanted, just delete the Programs in the Safety Task and run only normal non-safety Tasks, Programs, and Routines. The Safety Partner still has to be there, but because it will be doing Safety functions for an empty Task it will have a minimal effect on scantime.

Thanks, Ken. That's helpful.

I have "Studio 5000- Full." I need to ask someone if this (see pic) means the add-on is available for purchase, or if it is currently available to me as part of the package... a free add-on for that package level. However, free and Rockwell are rarely used in the same sentence. I do have a current Tech Connect contract, if that matters.

Look at the bottom of the page (not visible in your pic)

green circle = included
+ sign inside circle = available separately.

So yes, your 'full' version includes the Safety Editor

Cool! Thanks! I just got the same information from my local Rockwell distributor. I'll see about downloading it tonight. ...Looks like I have another learning curve to tackle.

Now that the safety processor is on my radar, I'm starting to see it at other customers.

Just a follow-up to help the next person:

I called Tech Support and talked to a safety specialist for Logix5000. After explaining the situation, he asked me to check the "About", then "More Info" to check what is installed. In hindsight it's an obvious step, but I hadn't expected that the GuardLogix Editor was already installed. This picture is what told me it was already installed:
