Hello all,

I am looking for a reliable and sensibly priced TAP to monitor Ethernet traffic with wireshark.
Mainly I want it for non-realtime ethernet, but realtime (Profinet) would be a plus too. I
saw this TAP in Amazon but the comments were not very good. I then came across ProfiTAP but it looks pricey.
Can anyone suggest a device? Has anyone used ProfiTap. What is its cost?

Regards

Some more options - but for realtime analysis you should probably invest in better tools as timing WILL be affected as you pass this copied traffic into your PC.

1. Small USB-powered port mirror device. Simple, easy to power with a laptop on batter (no wall wart). No config, just plug and go - $US80

2. Small switch that does port mirroring. Cheaper - $US30, but requires some simple config. Need AC adapter. Netgear makes the same thing for a little more money.

3. Small router device that does port mirror, maybe something like this:

Pricing is good, but steep learning curve. Much more capable - can route, has a firewall, packet generator. Lots of built in tools.

4. Special tap - like you reference. I would like a profitap too. Do not recommend this: http://www.fte.com/products/NetworkTap.aspx

which is similar. Doesn't really work the way we need it to, and when I called support I was not convinced they knew what Ethernet and TCP/IP is. Not good for a company selling network diagnostic equipment. I heard good things about the profitap.

Hard to beat the USB powered device for portability even if it costs more than some of the other options.
