Well, what I have done in the past is set up a display area that will show an error code number, make a nice error code reference and place it at the machine, group a like codes together so a like codes have the same prefix, ex 1xx = air pressure, 2xx = cylinder and so on and so fourth. Then write some plc code to move the error code number to the display dm area on the display when the conditions are true. This is not the best but those 256 issues are very common on low end HMIs from all venders.
