Computer requirement

Oh come on, Srik, you're not even trying now!

Microprocessors handle data in different sized chunks. Some handle 8-bits at a time, some handle 16-bits at a time, some 32-bit etc ... Operating systems also operate on different sized chunks of data, or as we technical gurus call them 'words'. However, it's no good the microprocessor being able to handle a given amount of data unless the operating system can feed the data to it in these sizes. If you have an 8-bit microprocessor and a 32-bit operating system trying to force feed it 32-bits of data each clock cycle, it's clearly going to choke. Equally a 64-bit microprocessor running an 8-bit operating system is going to have a lot of spare capacity on its hands. It will get bored and start looking for things to pass the time and sooner or later it will forget where it was and an accident will happen.

If you seriously intend to buy a computer system based on the specification of the operating system, first find out how it handles data, then make sure you select hardware that can also support this. On the other hand, most PCs come with an operating system and the manufacturer will have done that job for you. If you're considering a self-build and baking your own, then it appears you still have a lot of research still to do if you've started by asking this question.

Regards

Ken
