Linear Variable Differential Transformers(LVDT)

Hi everybody,
I was given the task to explain the 'Principle of operation' in which LVDTs operate.I am asking if you people could give me any in formation on the topic.(That is,on what either mechanical or electrical principle do LVDTs work?)

In chapter 22 you will find LDVT amongst Analogue Inputs

Hugh Jacks description of LVDTs is good and simple, just don't waste the time building the signal conditioning circuit; its to demonstrate the theory only.
