PLC backups/inventory

As i'm new to PLC's etc. I was wondering if anyone could answer the following.

I have a variety of PLCs allen bradley, Seimans TI etc which I need to produce an inventory/backup solution for
What is neccessary to take a complete backup of the PLC (I realise that I may need a variety of software applications)
and how imprtant are annotations and firmware revisions if i use the backup on a replacment PLC
