I have just had a supplier mention IEC61850 communication protocol, which sounds like something that sooner or later some customer will start asking for.

So, to try and get ahead of the game;

What exactly is IEC61850 protocol, from what I can make out, it is just a way of addressing things on an Ethernet network. Is that correct, or does it something more?

Also, we have standardise on Redlion G3 HMIs & Allen-Bradley PLCs (primarily SLC range, but some Compactlogix as well).

Can they use this protocol?

Any information would be welcome.

Thanks
