o_OI've lucked out - my department has funds available for buying training and testing equipment, and it's a pretty decent amount. We've got standard Control Logix racks, so I'm planning to get the latest and greatest CPU, GuardLogix CPU, some safety Point I/O to go along with what we already have, and the highest capacity EthernetIP adapter. I want the 'best' edition of RSLogix 5000 with 2 licenses which seems to be 9324‑RLD700NXENE or 9324‑RLD700NXENF. I'm puzzled by the term 'Node Locked'. Does this mean the software is tied to one machine instead of a moveable license? I have to have the moveable license.
As for software, I'm wondering if I can get a part number that includes HMI, Alarming, historian, etc. with a configuration and runtime.
I'm thinking that I'd also would like to get multi-year maintenance for the software. Is that available?
I'm also planning on picking up the new Micro800 with ethernet and a new panel view. Any recommendations?
I'm studying the online catalog before I ask for a quote from our local distributor. But I'll take any tips that I can get.

why very expensive, students will not be happy, as they have to learn the basics and not what is possible with expensive things

Ask yourself
Howmany of your staff are you going to train - to use the high levels of
equipment you propose.
you will end up training specialists -
If it was me - I would learn all I could then leave
If you are a learning institution - no problems
But if you need your staff to fault trace machinery - then this may be overkill

There's actually a decent amount of loyalty within our company for a variety of reasons. One of them being their willingness to invest in equipment, research and training, such as what I'm referring to here.

JCBondIL,

Your understanding of Node Locked is correct. However, Allen Bradley has Local Node Locked and Mobile Node Locked activation. I have always used local node locked activation and know that it is limited to only one PC. I am not familiar with the mobile node locked activation. Will you be having a server PC that can manage the activation to client PCs? In that case you can get the concurrent license. Again, something I have not used before.

Thanks for the info. I had just started looking into this yesterday, and I just came across a FAQ that gives a good explanation:

Apparently you can move the Local Node Locked activation, but the computer has to be connected to the internet for deactivation and moving. Or, we could purchase the dongle and tie the activation to that - I think I'll probably chose that route, but I'm going to think it over.
Thinking it over, the Mobile Node Locked probably refers to using a dongle...
Thanks again for your help.
