Remote IO classified as an RTU?

I've been doing DAQ and SCADA for years and I'm still not sure what the textbook definition of an RTU is.

All RTU's I've ever seen is a remote device that consolidates field data to a single communications link that communicates with a host.

What the field data is (I/O or digital data) and what the comm link is are specific to the RTU.

I've seen single field device called an RTU, although the vast majority are multi-point on the field side. In the current world of wireless networks, maybe single point devices in a wireless network are not RTU's in the conventional sense.

In the absence of a textbook definition, I'd say your definition of remote I/O with a wireless link is an RTU.
